About the machines

What is a ride-on road roller

Ride-on road rolleris a machine the operator drives from the seat (behind the wheel); it moves under its own power and compacts the material with a vibrating drum. Unlike walk-behind machines, ride-ons are built for large areas and thick lifts: subgrade and embankments, sand and crushed-stone bases, backfill, and asphalt paving on roads, highways and industrial yards.

The FURD FYL series covers the entire compaction chain.Single-drum soil rollers(FYL-D series, classes from roughly 3 to 16 tonnes) work the lower layers of the pavement structure with deep vibration.Tandem asphalt(FYL-1000/1100/1200/1400) and compactride-on rollers(FYL-850/855/860/880) roll the surface course to an even finish with a clean edge.Combinationrollers (FYL-900T/1200T/1400T) combine a vibratory drum and pneumatic tyres, sealing the pores of the top layer in a single pass. Choosing the right type and weight determines both compaction quality and the service life of the project.

Selection

How to choose a ride-on roller

Start with the type that suits your material, then the weight for your lift thickness, then the vibration settings. That order, not any other.

1. Type by material

Soil and crushed stone — a single-drum soil roller (FYL-D); asphalt — tandem (FYL-1000…1400) or combination (FYL-…T); yards and small areas — a compact ride-on (FYL-850…880).

2. Operating weight

Light, up to ~4 t — tight spots and backfill; medium 4–10 t — bases and residential streets; heavy 10–16 t — highways and industrial embankments. Match the weight to the lift you actually run, not to whatever feels safest.

3. Drum: smooth or padfoot

Smooth drums for sand, crushed stone and asphalt; padfoot for cohesive soils — loam and clay — where the pads knead the lift and drive the air and moisture out of it.

4. Vibration and amplitude

High amplitude for thick soil lifts, low amplitude for thin asphalt that mustn't be damaged. Switchable amplitude covers both base and surface courses with one machine.

Applications

From subgrade to finished asphalt

A single-drum soil roller builds the strong, incompressible base — embankments, sand cushions, crushed-stone layers. Tandem and combination rollers then follow on top of it, rolling the asphalt: breakdown, intermediate, finish. In yards and narrow streets the compact ride-ons take over. Get that chain right and the road won't rut or settle in its first winter.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about ride-on rollers

How does a ride-on roller differ from a walk-behind one?
A ride-on is operated from the seat (behind the wheel), moves under its own power and is built for large areas and thick lifts — roads, highways, industrial bases. A walk-behind (or compact) machine is smaller, steered by a handle or radio remote, and suits pavements, yards and tight spots. If compact machines are what you need, seeFURD walk-behind rollers.
Single-drum, tandem or combination — what is the difference?
A single-drum soil roller (one wide drum at the front + drive wheels) compacts soil and crushed stone with deep vibration. A tandem roller (two smooth vibratory drums) rolls asphalt to an even surface with a clean edge. A combination roller (front vibratory drum + rear pneumatic tyres) combines vibratory and finish compaction, sealing the pores of the top layer in a single pass.
Which roller do I need for soil and subgrade compaction?
For the lower layers of the pavement structure — subgrade, embankments, sand and crushed-stone bases, backfill — go for a single-drum soil roller from the FYL-D series (classes from roughly 3 to 16 tonnes). The light classes suit backfill and cramped sites; the heavy ones handle highway embankments and large areas.
Which roller should I choose for asphalt paving?
Asphalt is rolled with tandems (FYL-1000/1100/1200/1400) — they give you evenness and a clean edge. For finish compaction and a sealed surface, take a combination roller with pneumatic tyres (FYL-900T/1200T/1400T). Yards and narrow streets are compact ride-on territory (FYL-850/855/860/880). More in the articleon choosing a roller for asphalt.
What is a padfoot drum and when is it needed?
A padfoot drum carries protruding pads that sink into the soil and knead it from the inside, breaking up clods and pushing out trapped air and excess moisture. You need it on cohesive soils — loam and clay — where a smooth drum seals the top crust and leaves the bottom of the lift loose. Sand and crushed stone call for a smooth drum instead.
How do I match roller weight to lift thickness?
Operating weight sets the linear load, and with it the thickest lift the machine can genuinely compact. Rough guide: light, up to ~4 t — thin lifts and tight spots; medium 4–10 t — bases and residential streets; heavy 10–16 t — highways and thick lifts. Oversizing hurts: too much weight on a thin lift over-compacts the material and crushes the aggregate, while too little leaves the bottom of the lift loose.
What does a combination roller with pneumatic tyres give you?
Rear pneumatic tyres work differently from a steel drum: rubber is softer, the contact patch changes under load, and the tyres knead the top layer and draw bitumen to the surface. This finish compaction seals the pores, improves water resistance and makes the top of the lift impermeable. By adjusting tyre pressure, the operator tunes the degree of sealing to the lift and the mix temperature.
What documents do you provide (EAC, SPM, ESF)?
Every machine ships with a certificate of conformity carrying the EAC mark (TR CU 010/2011) and an SPM (self-propelled machine passport) for registration; legal entities also get an ESF (electronic invoice). Tenders and roller registration both need the full set — we hand it over with the delivery.
Is there a warranty and service in Kazakhstan?
Yes. FURD KZ is an official dealer: a 12-month warranty, our own service team and genuine spare parts held in Kazakhstan (drums, scrapers, vibration unit components, hydraulics, filters). With heavy equipment, service counts for more than price — a machine standing idle for want of a consumable costs you more than the gap between two models.
How do I buy a ride-on roller and what about delivery?
Send a request through the site or message us on WhatsApp. A manager will go through the job with you — soil or surface type, lift thickness, volume, output needed — pick a model and work out price and delivery. Popular models ship from stock in Kazakhstan, and heavy equipment travels by lowboy trailer to any region of the country. Ask your manager for current prices and availability.
